Trienens Performance Center

Northwestern University dedicated the newly renovated Trienens Performance Center on November 15, 2019. The transformation was made possible by the generosity of Trustee Howard J. Trienens ’45, ’49 JD, ’95 H, a loyal Northwestern benefactor for more than four decades.

Trienens Performance Center, a world-class training facility located next to Ryan Field and Welsh-Ryan Arena, will help Wildcats student-athletes navigate their days more efficiently than ever. The building—previously Trienens Hall—now includes a sports performance area, three indoor practice courts, team meeting rooms, coaches’ offices, a performance nutrition hub, and sports medicine amenities. The Mogentale Training Facility, located at the north end of the building, provides indoor hitting and pitching spaces where baseball and softball players can practice in the winter.

Gleacher Golf Center and Patten Gymnasium

Northwestern Athletics and Recreation officially dedicated the newly renovated Gleacher Golf Center and Patten Gymnasium on November 10, 2019. Named in recognition of a leadership gift from University Trustee Eric J. Gleacher ’62 (’91, ’12 P) and Paula Gleacher, the Gleacher Golf Center is the home of Wildcats men’s and women’s golf.

The center features a 5,400-square-foot short-game and putting area with raised ceilings, a nearly 3,000-square-foot green, and a state-of-the-art training area with three bays, as well as an adjustable putting platform, three-dimensional modeled green, and overhead projector that use augmented reality to display putting paths and drills. The facility also includes new men’s and women’s locker rooms, a lounge with a dedicated study area and full kitchen, and a sports performance hub.

Additional renovations to Patten Gymnasium include improved training facilities for Wildcats fencing.

Louis A. Simpson and Kimberly K. Querrey Biomedical Research Center

Northwestern University officially opened the Louis A. Simpson and Kimberly K. Querrey Biomedical Research Center—the largest biomedical academic research building in the United States—on June 17, 2019. The building is named in honor of Northwestern Trustees Louis A. Simpson ’58 (’96 P) and Kimberly K. Querrey (’22, ’23 P) in recognition of their generous support that has advanced the University’s academic excellence and scientific discovery.

The new 12-story, Perkins+Will-designed building added more than 625,000 square feet of research space to the Chicago academic medical campus. Each floor, which can house 23 principal investigators and their teams, also has deliberate interaction space to promote cross talk and collaboration among the center’s three lab “neighborhoods.”

The building also features new public spaces, such as the Potocsnak Family Atrium, the 160-seat Simpson Querrey Auditorium, the Judd A. and Marjorie Weinberg Gallery, the Kabiller Student Commons, and the Senyei Conference Center.

Welsh-Ryan Arena

Northwestern University dedicated the new Welsh-Ryan Arena on November 2, 2018, following a complete renovation. The transformation was made possible by the generosity of loyal Northwestern benefactors and alumni, most notably Trustee Patrick G. Ryan ’59, ’09 H (’97, ’00 P) and Shirley Welsh Ryan ’61, ’19 H (’97, ’00 P).

Welsh-Ryan is the world-class competitive home for Northwestern men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, and wrestling, as well as a host of events for the University and surrounding communities. The arena is believed to be the most accessible anywhere in college athletics, with ADA seating on every level and from every vantage point.

Throughout the venue, hints of its past exist for fans. The original roof structure remains intact and refurbished. Each of the four corner stairwells in the building includes the original exterior wall of the old Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Ryan Fieldhouse, Wilson Field, and the Walter Athletics Center

Northwestern’s lakefront athletic facilities have transformed the footprint of Athletics and Recreation, as well as the footprint of the University.

Ryan Fieldhouse, one of the most versatile indoor practice, competition, and recreation venues in the nation, was made possible by the generosity of benefactors and alumni like Trustee Patrick G. Ryan ’59, ’09 H (’97, ’00 P) and Shirley Welsh Ryan ’61, ’19 H (’97, ’00 P). It features 96,135 square feet of recreation space and a 44-foot-tall glass façade, which provides clear views of Lake Michigan to the north and east.

Housing Wilson Field—named for Trustee Stephen R. Wilson ’70, ’74 MBA (’08 P) and his wife, Susan K. Wilson ’70 (’08 P)—Ryan Fieldhouse hosts football, soccer, lacrosse, and other varsity sport practices; club and intramural activities; and special events such as Dance Marathon and the President’s Convocation.

The Walter Athletics Center, adjacent to Ryan Fieldhouse, is named in honor of Kimbra D. Walter ’85 and University Trustee Mark R. Walter ’85 JD. The new home of Northwestern Athletics and Recreation, the Walter Athletics Center serves as the day-to-day hub for more than 500 student-athletes across all 19 varsity programs. Specifically, the building brings together under one roof the sports performance, sports medicine, nutrition, locker rooms, and academic support services student-athletes need to succeed.

The Querrey Simpson Wing of the Walter Athletics Center, named for Northwestern Trustees Kimberly K. Querrey (’22, ’23 P) and Louis A. Simpson ’58 (’96 P), is located on the building’s third floor. The wing includes Northwestern Athletics’ academic services, compliance, and NU For Life programs, as well as Nona Jo’s Dining Center, a nutritional hub with indoor and outdoor seating.

560 Lincoln Residence Hall

Northwestern University celebrated the opening of its modern residence hall at 560 Lincoln St.—featuring gorgeous views of the lakefront, kitchens on each floor, two-story lounges and special spaces designed to create community for students to study, take classes, and socialize in comfort—September 29, 2017. There are 422 beds in the new facility, located at the north end of the Evanston campus. It boasts 140,000 square feet of living space, laundry rooms scattered throughout, a “piano room,” new classrooms, a game room, “open study” and “quiet study” rooms and a neighborhood desk in a welcoming reception area with a separate mailroom at the entrance.

Virginia Wadsworth Wirtz Center for the Performing Arts

In the 1970s, Northwestern University alumna and supporter Virginia Wadsworth Wirtz ’24, a champion of the arts, helped her alma mater raise the funds needed to build what was then the Theatre and Interpretation Center. Today, her memory lives on in the newly renovated Virginia Wadsworth Wirtz Center for the Performing Arts.

A gift from her grandson, Chicago Blackhawks chairman William Rockwell “Rocky” Wirtz ’75, and his wife, Marilyn, enabled Northwestern to rename the center in Virginia’s honor in 2014. University leaders honored the Wirtz family and other lead benefactors of the School of Communication at a June 13, 2017, ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the official reopening of the fully renovated center.

On March 29, 2017, Northwestern University and the Kellogg School of Management welcomed faculty, students, alumni, and staff to the Global Hub, an innovative 415,000-square-foot building on the Evanston campus that houses Kellogg and the Economics department in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. Located along the shores of Lake Michigan, the 415,000-square-foot building has a distinctive two-atrium design and features a variety of signature learning and convening spaces.

The University broke ground on the Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium on April 25, 2015, while also celebrating construction of the new outdoor football practice field, Chap and Ethel Hutcheson Field. Hutcheson Field, located south of Martin Stadium, will be used for intramural and club sports.

The Garage

The Garage

The spirit of entrepreneurship has solidified its roots at Northwestern, as the University unveiled The Garage on June 16, 2015. The space is dedicated to uniting students across disciplines to grow their ideas into world-changing solutions, and possibly future startups. Located on the second floor of a new parking garage on the Evanston campus, The Garage consists of large spaces for workshops and classes, a prototyping area, high-tech boards for visual collaboration, an open-kitchen plan, flexible meeting space, a large lounge space, privacy booths, and a 3-D printer for testing ideas. Coined the “beautiful new front door for Northwestern” by the University’s associate provost for enrollment management, Michael Mills, the Segal Visitors Center opened in the fall of 2014. The new lakefront center, which has already welcomed thousands of parents and prospective students with its broad views of Lake Michigan, includes a 160-seat auditorium, meeting rooms, offices for admission staff, and waiting areas for visitors.
